v2rayN PC Setup Guide: Import Nodes, Configure IP, DNS & Browser Settings

This article addresses the common question “how to configure v2rayN on PC”: from downloading and installing to importing nodes and enabling the proxy, then explaining the relationship between IP, DNS, and the browser environment to help you understand why it sometimes shows as connected but web pages still won’t open, or why the region detected by a website does not match.

1. Install v2rayN and import nodes

v2rayN is a commonly used V2Ray/Xray graphical client on Windows, suitable for importing VLESS, VMess, Trojan, and other nodes. Before using it, it is recommended to download the latest compressed package from a trusted source, extract it to a path without Chinese characters, such as D:v2rayN, and then run v2rayN.exe.

  1. Open v2rayN. If it prompts on first launch that the core is missing, choose “Check for Updates” or “Update Xray Core” from the menu.
  2. Prepare nodes: you can use an airport subscription, or the free node links provided on this site. Note that the stability of free nodes may fluctuate.
  3. Import a single node: copy a vmess://, vless://, or trojan:// link, then in v2rayN choose “Servers” → “Import from Clipboard”.
  4. Import a subscription: choose “Subscription Group” → “Subscription Group Settings”, add the subscription address, save it, then click “Update Subscription”.
  5. Right-click a node and click “Set as Active Server”.

After importing, it is recommended to test latency first. Latency is not the same as actual speed, but it can help rule out obviously unusable nodes. If multiple nodes all fail, first check whether the subscription has expired and whether the link was copied completely.

2. Enable the system proxy and routing mode

After configuring nodes in v2rayN, you still need to make your computer traffic go through the proxy. Find the v2rayN icon in the system tray at the bottom right, click “System Proxy”, and generally choose Automatically Configure System Proxy. At this point, Chrome, Edge, and built-in system apps will usually use the proxy automatically.

For routing mode, ordinary users are advised to choose “Bypass Mainland China” or “Rule Mode”: domestic websites connect directly, while overseas websites go through the proxy. If you are only temporarily testing a certain website, you can also switch to “Global Mode”, but long-term global mode is not recommended, because domestic services may become slower or behave abnormally.

  • Cannot open foreign websites: confirm that the system proxy is enabled and the node is set as the active server.
  • Domestic web pages become slow: change the routing from global to bypass mainland.
  • An app does not use the proxy: check whether the app has its own proxy settings, and if necessary manually enter 127.0.0.1 and the corresponding port.

3. What is the relationship between IP, DNS, and the browser environment?

Many people think that once v2rayN is connected, everything is fine, but in fact websites see more than just your IP. The IP represents the approximate region of your exit node; DNS is responsible for domain name resolution; and the browser environment also includes language, time zone, WebRTC, cookies, account region, and more. If this information conflicts with each other, it may result in login risk control, inconsistent region detection, or unavailable content.

In v2rayN, for normal use you can keep the default DNS settings; if you encounter DNS pollution or resolution to the wrong region, you can enable remote DNS in the settings or use the configuration recommended by the client. On the browser side, it is recommended to clear cookies for the target website, disable WebRTC plugins or settings that may leak your local address, and make the system time zone and browser language as consistent as possible with the node’s region. It is important to note that changing nodes does not mean changing your complete browser identity.

4. Quick troubleshooting for connection failures

If it shows connected but web pages will not open, the fastest way is to troubleshoot in this order: first switch to 2–3 different nodes, then update the subscription; check whether the computer’s time is accurate; temporarily exit antivirus and firewall software for testing; check whether the port is occupied; and finally restart v2rayN and the browser. If only one particular website will not open, that website may be restricting the node IP rather than your configuration being wrong.

Summary: the keys to configuring v2rayN on PC are valid nodes, system proxy enabled, an appropriate routing mode, and no conflicts between DNS and the browser environment. After setting it up according to the steps above, most everyday internet access scenarios should work normally.
