v2rayNG Not Connecting? Troubleshoot IP, DNS, and Browser Environment Issues

This article addresses the common issue of “what to do if v2rayNG won’t connect,” focusing on troubleshooting from four angles: whether the node is usable, the local IP network, DNS, and the browser proxy environment. It is suitable for users who have already imported V2Ray/VLESS/VMess nodes, but on their phones it shows as connected while web pages won’t open, or it keeps timing out or fails during the TLS handshake.

1. First, confirm that the node and subscription are working properly

Many connection failures are not caused by v2rayNG itself being broken, but by expired nodes, changed ports, or an outdated subscription. After opening v2rayNG, tap the menu in the upper right corner, selectUpdate Subscription, then long-press a node and run “Test all configurations with real connection.” If all nodes time out, first suspect the subscription source or the current network; if only a few nodes fail, simply switch to another node.

  1. Make sure your phone’s time is set to automatic sync, since incorrect time can cause TLS certificate verification to fail.
  2. Check that the node protocol, address, port, and UUID are complete, and do not accidentally edit them incorrectly.
  3. When copying free nodes from this site or other trusted sources, try to import them using a subscription link to reduce formatting errors.
  4. After enabling the connection, check whether the VPN icon appears at the top. If there is no icon, it means the core has not actually started.

2. Check the IP network environment: try both Wi-Fi and mobile data

The same node may behave completely differently on different networks. Home broadband, company Wi-Fi, campus networks, and carrier mobile data may all have restrictions. It is recommended to first turn off v2rayNG, then switch networks once: if Wi-Fi does not work, use mobile data; if mobile data does not work, switch to Wi-Fi. If it works immediately after switching, the problem is most likely with the original network environment.

If you see messages such as “connection refused,” “timeout,” or “no route to host,” this usually relates to line blocking, IP restrictions, or an unreachable route. At this point, do not keep tapping connect repeatedly. Just switch nodes, change networks, or wait for a while and try again. Some public Wi-Fi networks also require you to first open any webpage in a browser to complete authentication, otherwise v2rayNG will not be able to access the internet.

3. DNS issues can make it look connected while nothing opens

v2rayNG may show as connected, but if the browser cannot open websites, a common reason is abnormal DNS resolution. Go into v2rayNG settings and check options such as “Local DNS,” “Remote DNS,” and “Enable FakeDNS.” Ordinary users are advised to keep the default settings first; if you have changed them, restore the defaults and test again.

  • Turn off other tools that modify DNS, such as Private DNS, ad blockers, or network accelerators.
  • IfPrivate DNSis enabled in Android system settings, you can temporarily change it to “Off” or “Automatic.”
  • Clear the browser cache, or cross-test with Chrome and Firefox.
  • If only one particular website will not open, the issue may be with that site itself or with rule-based traffic routing.

4. The browser and proxy mode can also affect the results

v2rayNG usually takes over app traffic through Android VPN mode, but if your browser has proxy extensions or acceleration plugins installed, they may conflict with the system proxy. During troubleshooting, it is recommended to use an incognito window, disable browser extensions, and test multiple websites instead of looking at just one page.

In v2rayNG’s “Routing Settings,” choosing overly complex routing rules may also cause some traffic not to go through the proxy. Beginners can first chooseGlobal Modefor testing: if websites open in global mode, that means the node is working and the problem is with the rules; if they still do not open in global mode, go back to checking the node, network, and DNS.

5. Recommended quick troubleshooting order

If v2rayNG will not connect, it is recommended to handle it in this order: update the subscription, test the real connection, switch nodes, switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data, restore DNS defaults, disable Private DNS, switch to global mode, and restart the phone. If it still fails, then uninstall and reinstall the latest version of v2rayNG and re-import the subscription. During troubleshooting, change only one option at a time so it is easier to identify the cause. In short, failing to connect does not mean the software is unusable; in most cases, the issue can be identified by checking the node, IP network, DNS, and browser environment one by one.
