This article addresses the following issue: v2rayNG on your phone has already imported nodes or subscriptions, but after tapping connect you still cannot access the internet, tests fail, or timeouts occur frequently. Below, we troubleshoot in the order of “login environment — node information — client settings — network restrictions,” and ordinary users can simply follow along.
1. First check your current login and network environment
In many cases, it is not that v2rayNG itself is broken, but that the current network environment is unsuitable for connecting. It is recommended to complete these checks first:
- Make sure your phone’s time, date, and time zone are set to sync automatically; incorrect time can cause TLS verification to fail.
- Turn airplane mode off and back on, or switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data for testing.
- If you are using company, campus, or hotel Wi-Fi, there may be port or proxy restrictions, so try switching to mobile data first.
- Make sure no other VPNs, accelerators, or packet capture tools are enabled at the same time, otherwise they may occupy the VPN tunnel.
- Check whether Android has shown a VPN authorization prompt; if permission is not granted, the connection will not work.
Do not rush to delete the node as the first step; test by switching networks first, which can quickly determine whether the issue is with the node or the local environment.
2. Verify whether the node and subscription are valid
If this site or another source provides a subscription link, it is recommended to update the subscription first. Open v2rayNG, go to the menu in the upper-left corner, find “Subscription settings,” confirm that the link has no extra spaces, then return to the main screen and select “Update subscription.” If the node list is empty or an error appears after updating, it means the subscription address may be inaccessible or incorrectly formatted.
- Press and hold the current node, then select “Test this configuration” or “Test all configurations.”
- Give priority to nodes whose latency test returns a value; do not judge only by the name.
- Check whether the node type matches; for example, do not manually set VMess, VLESS, Trojan, or Shadowsocks incorrectly.
- If you copied a single share link, copy the complete link again to avoid missing characters at the end.
Expired nodes, blocked nodes, or modified parameters can all prevent v2rayNG from connecting. Free nodes can be used for temporary testing, but stability may fluctuate, so it is recommended to prepare multiple nodes for rotation and verification.
3. Check key v2rayNG client settings
Go to the v2rayNG settings page. Ordinary users only need to focus on the following items. For routing mode, it is recommended to first choose “Bypass LAN and mainland China addresses” or the default mode; do not casually enter unfamiliar DNS addresses, and during troubleshooting you can first restore the default; if “Proxy only mode” or “Per-app proxy” is enabled, make sure the browser or target app is allowed to use the proxy.
If the key icon appears after connecting but web pages still will not open, you can open a browser and visit a common website to test; if only some apps do not work, it is most likely a per-app proxy or DNS issue. If nothing can be accessed at all, try switching to nodes with the same transport protocol but in different regions.
4. How to interpret common error messages
- timeout, i/o timeout: usually the node is unreachable, the network is blocked, or the current Wi-Fi has restrictions.
- connection refused: the server port is unavailable; usually switching nodes is faster.
- tls handshake failed: incorrect time, mismatched SNI/domain parameters, or an invalid node.
- no route, network unreachable: abnormal local network; restart the network or switch to mobile data first.
The most effective troubleshooting order is: switch networks, update the subscription, test multiple nodes, restore the client’s default settings, and restart the phone. Do not change too many options at once, otherwise it will be difficult to tell which step worked.
5. What to do if it still cannot connect
Back up the subscription link first, then uninstall and reinstall the latest version of v2rayNG, and re-import the subscription for testing; you can also import the same subscription into Clash or sing-box clients for cross-checking. If other clients can connect, it means there is a problem with the v2rayNG settings; if none of them can connect, it is usually an issue with the node or the network environment. This site will compile importable free nodes and client tutorials, which you can use for connectivity testing, but avoid logging into important accounts on free nodes.
